Tender Greens

Berkeley, California 2018

This simple “core and shell” project brought back to life a lovely old building that had suffered decades of neglect and abuse.  What we would find under the uninspiring exterior skin that had accumulated over time — we had no idea until it was pealed off. We were pleased to find some good bones.  The lovely old brickwork was repointed. Seismic upgrades were installed. The giant billboard that sat atop the building was removed. Custom-designed steel window sash and new mahogany doors were installed. The building is now ready for another hundred years of life. The new facade brings back charm to the street and has helped to revitalize this stretch of University Avenue.
